The BBC has launched a new chart tracking the top 1,000 artists based on “buzz” across various online music, video and social networking sites – including Bebo, MySpace, Last .fm, iTunes, Google and YouTube. That's more than 23 million comments, posts, plays and views going into a chart – called the Sound Index – that's updated every six hours. You can filter it by location, age, gender and source sites, with each artist getting its own profile page on the Sound Index site. Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and Leona Lewis are currently duking it out at the top of the list, while we were surprised to see former web darlings Clap Your Hands Say Yeah lurking down at 998th spot.
