European streaming music service Spotify has signed up 800,000 users worldwide, with 250,000 of them being in the UK, according to reports in the Financial Times and New Media Age. Although those figures aren’t broken down into free and premium users, the suspicion is that the vast majority are using the free ad-supported version of the service. Meanwhile, co-founder Daniel Ek tells the FT that the company hopes to be profitable by the end of this year, and says he’s not worried about having launched an ad-supported business during an economic slump. “We could have had better timing, but I like downturns,” he says. “It gets you focused.”
