Apple has launched an online countdown for its App Store, ticking towards the one billion app downloads mark for iPhone and iPod touch. It stands at 950 million at the time of writing. Whoever nabs the billionth will win a package of prizes including a $10,000 iTunes gift card.Alongside the promotion, Apple has announced the top 20 paid and free apps since the launch of the App Store last July (see right)Games dominate the paid list – 14 out of 20 apps – but music is popular on the free chart, with Pandora, Tap Tap Revenge and Shazam all making it in.
