Spotify’s quest to get more users to upgrade to its paid-for premium service continues, with the announcement that it’s upping the streaming quality of the premium version. While the free ad-supported version of Spotify will continue streaming music at 160 kbps, the premium edition will now offer it at up to 320 kbps.The change will come in the latest release of the Spotify software, and uses the Ogg Vorbis q9 codec, which the company says equates to CD-quality streams. It’s accessed from the app’s preferences menu, with a new ‘Enable high bitrate’ box.Not every song will be available as a higher quality stream immediately – initially the most popular tracks will be, while the rest of Spotify’s catalogue is converted over the coming weeks. “Providing great sound quality has always been an important goal for us,” says CEO Daniel Ek. “Now, we’re taking the next step in offering an unparalleled listening experience.”
