Could Facebook be plotting a deal with streaming music service Spotify? That’s the claim in a post on TechCrunch, which suggests talks between the two companies “have intensified dramatically in the last week”. Although Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg’s latest status update – “Spotify is so good” – has fuelled the gossip, any heightening of negotiations would presumably be related to MySpace’s acquisition of iLike, which has been seen as an effort to bolster its music capabilities. The fact that Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-Shing – a Facebook investor – now owns a chunk of Spotify adds further weight to the prospects of some kind of partnership. Facebook was regularly rumoured to be launching its own music service in the last year, but it never came to pass. Now that its most popular music app belongs to its main rival, it would not be surprising if Facebook was looking for a new music play.Would it be mischievous to suggest that Facebook may even be a potential acquirer of Spotify at some point? Just a thought…
