Yesterday’s Billboard report claiming Spotify is dropping the monthly cost of its Premium subscription to £6.49 was off-beam. That was just part of the previously-reported sponsorship deal with car insurance firm Swiftcover, offering people a six-month discount if they signed up via its customer mailout. But hang on, wasn’t that deal for £8.99? Well, that’s the thing: Swiftcover actually sent out four different emails to segments of Spotify’s UK free userbase, offering the deal for £8.99, £7.99, £6.49 and £4.99. It’s a risky thing to do – how would users who signed up at £8.99 feel when they found out others were offered the same thing for four quid less? At the same time, we’d love to see the conversion stats – they’d give a good idea of how much people value this kind of service.
