17.7 billion mobile apps will be downloaded this year, more than double the 8.2 billion in 2010. Meanwhile, revenues from the app store downloads will top $15.1 billion this year, through a mixture of paid download fees and in-app advertising. That’s nearly triple the $5.2 billion of app revenues that Gartner estimates were made in 2010. “Many are wondering if the app frenzy we have been witnessing is just a fashion, and, like many others, it shall pass. We do not think so,” says research director Stephanie Baghdassarian. Gartner thinks that a whopping 81% of the 17.7 billion app downloads this year will be free.
