Friday saw the public unveiling of Remake, Remodel: The Evolution of the Record Label – the fourth industry report from MusicTank. BPI chairman Tony Wadsworth took the wrappers off the report at The Great Escape conference in Brighton, having written it with Eamonn Forde, with contributions from other industry figures. The tone is broadly optimistic, pointing to ‘a diversified recordings business with broader skill sets, able to better manage costs and work with a wider variety of more flexible artist deals’, as well as ‘a spirit of partnership with artists, managers and the wider industry’. However, the report still calls for more innovation in licensing, and increased transparency in the digital business – reading between the lines, you can see that perhaps the spirit of partnership with these innovative licensing deals still needs work when it comes to artists feeling confident that they’re benefitting fully. “I don’t claim to have all the answers but I hope to give some perspective to the key changes in an industry that’s adapting to a radically new environment without a template, map or guide book,” says Wadsworth.
