Spotify CEO Daniel EK announced that Spotify will no longer be invite-only in the US at the f8 conference last week, but it’s also emerged that users signing in via Facebook will have unlimited free streaming access for the first six months. The free six months will be available in all of Spotify’s launch territories (including the US) and is a major push to recruit subscribers on the back of Spotify’s Facebook integration.
In order to launch in the US Spotify had to seriously restrict its free tiers, so this is a major development. Details about how Spotify structured the licensing with label partners for this free access via Facebook haven’t been revealed. UMG’s Rob Wells claimed in July year that there was a clear six month inflection period when Spotify free users realise they see the service as valuable enough to pay for, so perhaps Spotify is looking to take advantage of this and the massive spike in users that will come from its Facebook open graph integration.
