One of the big holes in Facebook’s applications platform has been its web-only nature: you’ve never been able to access apps created for Facebook from its mobile apps or website. That all changed last night. The company has extended its Facebook Platform to mobiles and tablets, meaning anyone making Facebook applications can now target the 350 million people who access the social network from mobile devices (around half through its apps and half through its mobile website). “Social apps are all about interacting with your friends so the best social apps will be on both native iOS and web apps, and we encourage you to think about how to reach the total audience of Facebook users by building both,” writes software development engineer Luke Shepard in a blog post. The news means Facebook’s mobile users will be able to tap on application updates in their newsfeeds to launch those apps: which we think could be big for music apps like Spotify, Rdio, Rhapsody and the rest. Alongside the news, Facebook finally launched its native iPad app last night. Source: The Appside
