The proposed SOPA and PIPA legislation in the US is now on ice, but what about the global Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) that was negotiated behind closed doors for much of 2011? Although agreed, the treaty has run into trouble in Europe. The German foreign ministry said on Friday that it will delay signing the treaty, according to Reuters. This came in the face of rallies in several European countries against ACTA, including more than 25,000 people in Germany and 4,000 in Bulgaria. “It’s not acceptable to sacrifice the rights of freedom for copyrights,” says German Green Party leader Thomas Pfeiffer, reflecting the view of protestors elsewhere in the EU.
