agnethaDavid Bowie, Destiny’s Child, My Bloody Valentine… Surprise digital releases are becoming A Thing in 2013 already. Here’s one more for the list: ABBA’s Agnetha Fältskog.

Universal Music Group has announced that she’s releasing a new album in May called ‘A’, with its first single ‘When You Really Loved Someone’ available this morning as a surprise release.

A newly-launched website explains that fans can pre-order Agnetha’s new album from iTunes, with an official Twitter feed and Vevo video for the single also going live this morning.

It’s Agnetha’s first album since ‘My Colouring Book’ in 2004, when she was signed to Warner Music. Don’t expect too many echoes of ABBA’s heyday though: “We wanted to make this as if Agnetha hadn’t entered ABBA,” says songwriting partner Jorgen Elofsson.

“We were interested in what she sounded like if she hadn’t been in the group. And yet it’s important that she comes across as we remember her to be.” Elofsson is best known for his work on songs for the likes of Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Celine Dion and Westlife.
