saysamethingApple’s App Store has passed 50bn app downloads for iOS devices, and it was indie band OK Go whose app hit the milestone.

Apple announced today that Ohio resident Brandon Ashmore downloaded the band’s new Say the Same Thing word game to take the store past 50bn, winning a $10k App Store gift card for his trouble.

The game was launched this month, inspired by the likes of Words With Friends and Draw Something. It gets people to choose random words, then guess the connections between them until they, yes, say the same thing.

Today’s news is likely to give downloads of the game a boost.

Apple says the App Store is currently generating more than 2bn downloads a month (and 800 apps a second, if you want to get granular).

“The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over nine billion dollars to developers. We’re absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years,” says SVP of internet software and services Eddy Cue, in a statement.
