More apps were downloaded from Android’s Google Play store than from iOS’ App Store in the second quarter of this year, according to new research from analytics firm App Annie. That’s a milestone of sorts, although not a surprising one given that Android devices have been outselling iOS devices by some distance for a while now. However, App Annie notes that the App Store “generated 2.3x the revenue” of Google Play in Q2, as iOS continued to be more lucrative for developers. Which, based on Apple figures showing it’s paying around $1bn to iOS developers every month, suggests that the App Store paid out $3bn in Q2, and Google Play around $1.3bn. But those are very rough estimates. Both stores continue to be dominated by games: 80% of Google Play revenues and 75% of App Store revenues were from games in Q2, according to App Annie. However, Music was the third largest App Store category by revenue, up from seventh this time last year.
