The news over the weekend that Samsung is launch its Milk Music radio-style service is unlikely to cause Pandora too many sleepless nights according to new consumer data from Statista/Edison Research. Nor will iTunes Radio. Or iHeartRadio. Or Spotify. And so on. Consumers aged 12 and older in the US were asked what service they had listened to in the past month and 31% named Pandora. Its closest competitor was iHeartRadio (9%), followed by iTunes Radio (8%) and Spotify (6%). Pandora has, based on this research, a delightfully comfortable lead and all it has to do is turn that lead into profitability – which is proving the tricky part for everyone here.
