Things have gone quiet (publicly at least) on YouTube’s negotiations with independent labels for its upcoming subscription music service. However, news emerged at the weekend about its possible branding. It seems Google has been registering domain names around the world with the term MusicKey, including and “The only domain names containing both YouTube and music that the company has acquired since 2006,” as GigaOm reports, with YouTube declining to comment on its plans for these domain names. Speculation over the last year has pointed towards Music Pass being the name for YouTube’s subscription music service, but with recent reports suggesting the company’s plans remain fluid, a rebrand to MusicKey isn’t impossible. Or, of course, it could relate to another music-related initiative or service that YouTube is part of within Google…
