The former CEO of streaming service Mog, David Hyman, has outlined first details of his new startup, Chosen. Due to launch in the first quarter of 2015, it’s being described by TechCrunch as a “mobile-first American Idol” – an app that gets people to enter a musical competition by singing or playing music into their smartphone. The company has raised $5m of funding, with engineering and product teams in Israel and the US. “We aim to free the genre from the constraints of linear based television, which is forced to focus solely on the lowest common denominator, and as a result, provide one singular type of vocal music to an audience,” Hyman told TechCrunch. “We want to see guitar solo competitions, Swiss yodeling competitions, and violin concerto competitions. There’s a long tail of content that is unbelievably popular. An insane amount of content is consumed through YouTube that would never be on TV.” We wonder if YouTube will play a big part in Chosen, or whether it’ll be app-only. In any case, it sounds worth watching, not least to find out what kind of business model Chosen has, well, chosen.
