Indies ride to freemium streaming’s defence

The battle lines are being drawn up in 2015’s debate about the effectiveness of free, on-demand streaming as a funnel towards paid subscriptions. Lucian Grainge, Jimmy Iovine, Lohan Presencer and Doug Morris on one side, but now several prominent voices from the independent sector backing up Spotify and similar services on the other. “Spotify has, to my mind, made a pretty irresistible case in favour of the freemium model at this stage in the market’s development,” Beggars Group’s Martin Mills told Music Business Worldwide yesterday.
