US musician Melissa Ferrick is the frontperson for the second songwriter class-action lawsuit against Spotify – the $200m one, as opposed to David Lowery’s $150m one.

She’s been speaking to Hypebot about the motivation behind the case. “I see this as both a personal undertaking and an opportunity to stand up for all writers/publishers,” she said.

Ferrick also batted back a question about whether she had contacted Spotify prior to filing the lawsuit: “It was Spotify’s obligation to get licensees prior to using my music.”

Ferrick added that she is not motivated by a distrust of streaming itself, however, saying she would be happy to have her music on Spotify. “Yes, if my music is licensed properly. I have no issue with streaming services but I believe they should be following the law.”
