Ad-blocking is the trend that has the entire online-news industry spooked, not to mention the advertising world. Now Facebook is making a significant move to push back against the trend for internet users to block ads.

“We’ve designed our ad formats, ad performance and controls to address the underlying reasons people have turned to ad blocking software,” wrote Facebook’s VP of ads and business platform Adam Bosworth in a blog post yesterday. “When we asked people about why they used ad blocking software, the primary reason we heard was to stop annoying, disruptive ads. As we offer people more powerful controls, we’ll also begin showing ads on Facebook desktop for people who currently use ad blocking software.” Details of how the latter will work are still emerging, but the former is clearer: Facebook will make it easier for its users to stop seeing ads about certain topics or from certain businesses. The social network is setting out its stall against ad-blocking companies though. “Rather than paying ad blocking companies to unblock the ads we show — as some of these companies have invited us to do in the past — we’re putting control in people’s hands…”
