It sounds like a joke: Snapchat launching a pair of $129.99 spectacles with a built-in camera that shoots “circular video” clips up to 10 seconds long at a time. But nope: Spectacles is a real product, unveiled by Snapchat on Friday and due to go on sale in “a limited number” this autumn in the US. Here’s how CEO Evan Spiegel described the experience of using it on a holiday to the Wall Street Journal. “When I got the footage back and watched it, I could see my own memory, through my own eyes — it was unbelievable,” he said. “It’s one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it’s another thing to have an experience of the experience. It was the closest I’d ever come to feeling like I was there again.” Well, quite. “We’re going to take a slow approach to rolling them out. It’s about us figuring out if it fits into people’s lives and seeing how they like it.” Alongside the news: a rebrand of Snapchat to Snap, Inc, to represent the fact that “we are developing other products”. And also moving towards an IPO. “You can search Snapchat or Spectacles for the fun stuff and leave Snap Inc. for the Wall Street crowd…”
