Media firm Trace is launching its TracePlay subscription service, which will offer a combination of music, TV and films for $4.99 a month.
The service is launching first in the US, UK, France, the Benelux countries, Africa, the Caribbean and ‘the Indian Ocean’, promising 31 music-focused radio channels, 10 live-music and sports TV channels, and a catalogue of more than 2,000 TV shows and films.
Its focus is on urban music, although for Trace that’s a wide category, taking in genres ranging from R&B and hip-hop to Afrobeat, Soca, salsa and gospel music.
The TracePlay app will be available on desktop, Android/iOS and Apple TV devices, with subscribers able to watch on up to three screens at once.
It’s an early example of a trend that we see growing in the years ahead: niche subscription services that blend music and video, although in this case, the music appears to be more radio than on-demand.
