VR startup Inception raises $15m funding round

We wrote about virtual-reality startup Inception in our VR Music Primer earlier this year: although not exclusively focused on music, the Israeli company has worked with artists including Ed Harcourt.

Now the company has raised a Series A funding round of $15m, including investment from TV firm RTL Group. It will now hold a 15% stake in the company, having led the round.

Inception has already launched its app for iOS and Android, as well as headsets including the Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive and Google Daydream View.

“Our unique combination of great technology and content will make VR more accessible and enjoyable for audiences around the world,” said Inception CEO Benny Arbel in a statement.

RTL’s involvement could guide Inception more down a path of video and TV-style content rather than music, although music continues to be an enticing showcase for VR’s creative potential, so we’re hopeful that the startup won’t move out of our sector entirely.
