The problem with ‘superfan’ apps that promise to get fans closer to their favourite stars has historically that they don’t tend to attract many fans.
We’ve seen a number of these apps launch and sink without making an impact. Can TraceMe buck the trend?
The app was founded by American Footballer Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks, and it’s just raised $9m of funding from investors including Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley, as well as VC firm Madrona Venture Group.
The TraceMe app, which has launched for iPhone, will provide “daily updates with exclusive videos, photos and other brand new original content” from athletes, musicians and other celebrities.
At the moment, it features just one celebrity, Wilson himself, although the app is still in beta-testing mode. “We are building a social platform where you can connect with your fans, and where they can connect with you,” he told GeekWire.
