Roku is launching a voice assistant for smart speakers

Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana and the rest of the voice-assistant gang will soon be getting a new member, from an unexpected source.

Set-top box maker Roku has announced plans to launch the ‘Roku Entertainment Assistant’ by this autumn, which will be used to control entertainment on its own devices, as well as those made by licensors of its software.

Talking of which, Roku has also unveiled plans to launch reference designs for smart speakers and soundbars, which it hopes will encourage other consumer-electronics firms to make their own devices using its software.

Here, of course, Roku will also be competing with Amazon, Google and Microsoft (if not Apple) as they’re also trying to get their voice assistants licensed into a wider range of devices from other companies.
