Baidu copyright infringement lawsuit gets the go-ahead
In February, several major labels filed a lawsuit against Chinese web portal Baidu for copyright infringement, citing its deep-linking to sites offering illegal music downloads. Well, the case is now going to court - the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court to be precise (it’s like the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, except Chinese, and with judges instead of detectives). Anyway, the labels - UMG, Sony BMG and WMG - are seeking damages of $9 million for copyright infringement of 127 tracks. It’s not the first time Baidu has been sued by the music industry - last time round it was cleared, but only because the lawsuit was filed before the introduction of new regulations covering liability for this sort of thing.
