IMDA wants to define open standards for internet radio

Another day, another acronym-toting industry body. The IMDA – or Internet Media Device Alliance – has some heavyweight members from the start, though. Already on board are the BBC, Orange, Frontier Silicon, Pure Digital and a number of other companies.

So what’s the IMDA for? Well, it wants to “develop and promote a set of open, interoperable standards and device profiles to maximise the growth of a global consumer market in internet-connected media devices”.

As you do. Judging by this article on The Register, internet radio will be the focus for the IMDA, which is holding its first meeting on 9 January at the CES show in Las Vegas. The group is keen to sign up radio broadcasters and device makers, but it also specifically mentions online music service providers.
