How heavy metal bands get their names

Our favourite chart this week is called Heavy Metal Band Names, and it tracks the taxonomy of, well, heavy metal band names, showing how bands come up with their monikers.

There are five core categories – Deadly Things, Death, Badass Misspellings, Animals and Religion – and then subcategories below that. So Death (Megadeth, Corpse, Carcass) has subcategories like Pleas For Help (Sick Of It All, Suicidal Tendencies), Metaphorical (Sepulchura Doom, Grim Reaper), and Adolescent Poetry (Cradle of Filth, Thine Eyes Bleed).

Other subcategories include Umlauts, Extinct Animals, Viking and General Spookiness. The chart is a work of genius. We’re now spending the day trying to come up with a single band name that fits into all five master categories. Rabid Necro-Stoats Luv Jesus is our best effort so far – can you do any better?
