Pete Jenner: “The record industry is in the f***ing dumper!”
This morning saw a sometimes-stormy panel debate at MidemNet around how the music industry and ISPs should be working together. But unusually, the panelists from music biz bodies and ISPs were on the same side for much of it.
The most heated section saw consultant Gerd Leonhard accuse the music industry of desiring rules that are “just not reasonable”, provoking a stern rebuke from UK Music boss Feargal Sharkey.
“I don’t think that imposing one vision on all of humanity is the way to go,” he told Leonhard. “It’s slightly arrogant to come and tell two very successful industries that they don’t know what they’re doing.”
But this in turn provoked an even more heated reaction from music manager Pete Jenner, who was on the panel: “Two very successful industries? We’re talking about the record industry, which is in the fucking dumper!”
There was plenty more to the debate, which you can check out in full on our liveblog as it happened.
