UK newspaper The Times has signed a deal with iTunes and Big Brother Recordings to give away a bunch of live tracks recorded at Noel Gallagher’s Teenage Cancer Trust Royal Albert Hall gig in 2007, initially as downloads, then with a free cover CD on the newspaper itself. Here’s how it’ll work: from Tuesday 10th March for five days, The Times will print a link in the paper taking readers to a dedicated page on the iTunes Store where they can download that day’s track. The five tracks are:March 10th – (It’s Good) To Be FreeMarch 11th – Talk TonightMarch 12th – Cast No ShadowMarch 13th – The Importance Of Being IdleMarch 14th – Don’t Look Back In AngerBut then an 11-track CD will be given away with the paper on Sunday 15th March…It’ll have these tracks on:1. Fade Away2. Listen Up3. Half The World Away4. The Butterfly Collector5. All You Need Is Love6. Don’t Go Away7. Sad Song8. Wonderwall9. Slide Away10. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out11. Married With ChildrenAnd then on 16th March, the full 16-track album will be sold on iTunes, with proceeds going to the Teenage Cancer Trust charity. But hang on, doesn’t the giveaway mean the charity is losing out on donations?Well, no. A donation has been made to the charity in respect of the use of the recordings, and Big Brother Recordings is keen to stress that it’s not doing it out of any cash. Big Brother Recordings IS being paid by The Times at the market rate for such giveaways, from which an additional donation is being made to the Trust. So there you have it.
