US teens streaming music, not purchasing it
Several sites have been breaking out more details from NPD Group’s latest survey of music consumption, which we reported on last week. The new stats: 13-17 year-olds in the US spent 13% less on music downloads last year, and 26% less on CDs.
Although this co-incided with a 24% drop in overall entertainment spending by teens, so you could argue that downloads are suffering less. So how are teens getting their music instead?
Downloads from P2P networks fell 6% last year according to NPD, but 52% of teens say they listened to online radio – up from 34% in 2007 – while 46% used social networking sites to download or stream music – up from 26% in 2007.
