Coldplay giving away free live album as MP3s

coldplay-leftrightleftrightleftColdplay has announced plans to give away a free nine-track live album, LeftRightLeftRightLeft, at every gig this year. That’ll be in CD form, but the album will also be made available as a free download from the band’s website for fans not attending the concerts.

The band are describing it as a “recession-busting mark of gratitude” to fans. The tracks are taken from recordings of various gigs from Coldplay’s recent Viva La Vida tour, and the band have unveiled the tracklisting and artwork online.

It is:

1. Glass of Water
2. 42
3. Clocks
4. Strawberry Swing
5. The Hardest Part/Postcards From Far Away
6. Viva La Vida
7. Death Will Never Conquer
8. Fix You
9. Death And All His Friends

Most bands see live albums as a good way to shill some extra cash out of fans at the end of an album’s promotional / gigging campaign, so giving this one away free is certainly a welcome move from fans’ perspective.

Keeping my opinions about the possible motives behind some major label acts giving their music away to myself for now.

Most of our tracks have been released under a creative commons license.

We are an independent record label not a big bad corporation out to sue you for file sharing, we WANT you to spread our music around.

With such an overcrowded market place giving away your music is essential in my opinion. The biggest problem for emerging indie artists today is obscurity, not piracy. To find out more listen to The Antiqcool Podcast
