Spotify shows off Android mobile app at Google I/O event
TweetSpotify has made no secret of the fact that it’s working on mobile applications to access its streaming music service, but here’s the first video of how they’ll actually look.
Spotify has released the footage showing its official mobile app for Google’s Android platform, having publicly unveiled it last night at the Google I/O event.
What do you think? Let us know with your comments. It’s interesting that Spotify has chosen Android as the mobile debut, rather than iPhone – although it’s safe to assume the company is working on Apple’s handset too, among others.

Exciting. Wondering what the performance via 3G would be like, especially as syncing GMail is tortoise-like in its execution.
Also, it’s a shame that the G1’s audio output is USB, which has (thus far) stopped me from ever using it to listen to music.
Oh, and can’t imagine what the drain on the already overloaded battery is going to be like.
Still, exciting.

Remarkable. It is strange that they went for Google first and not iPhone (though launching at the Google event and all the possible spin offs must have swung it, as well as an already saturated iPhone app market place). Fair point Rhodri makes about the kill on the battery.

Actually, I can’t imagine T-Mobile being very happy about it being usable via 3G at all. Maybe that’s just not possible. I have no idea, just musing aloud.

Yeah, I wouldn’t touch a phone that didn’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack nowadays, bonkers that the G1 didn’t have one.

Looks great.
But time shifted streaming, to be able to listen to music on a tube – that’s really blurring the lines between streaming and downloading – seems more like a temporary download as opposed to buffering. I wonder if the collection societies will try to come up with a new rate?!!
Once the songs are on the mobile device for listening offline – can you listen to the tracks more than once?
Seems like a great application which will mean I’ll have fewer reasons to buy downloads for listening on a mobile device.
I assume therefore the app is going to be subscription only – I can’t imagine it will be free?

Hey Rob, I think Spotify’s Daniel Ek said at The Great Escape that they’ll be charging for the mobile versions, he didn’t say how much though – maybe you’ll only be able to run them if you have a premium subscription to Spotify itself?
