You can’t get more bitter than the dicks who made Trent Reznor quit Twitter

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor is rightly hailed as one of the most forward-thinking artists when it comes to digital marketing and social networking, so news that he’s (kinda) quit Twitter is saddening. His Twitter feed is now one-way – just announcements, no replies.

In a long post on his forum, he explains that it’s because of spammers and haters. “I will be tuning out of the social networking sites because at the end of the day it’s now doing more harm than good in the bigger picture and the experiment seems to have yielded a result. Idiots rule.”

Specifically, it seems Reznor and his other half have been suffering abuse on Twitter, which he suggests has been caused by the fact that he’s “not the same person I was in 1994″. And he has a theory on this, too:

“Looks like the Metal Sludge contingency has discover Twitter! Finally! For those of you that don’t know what this is, please let me explain. Metal Sludge is the home of the absolutely worst people I’ve ever come across. It’s populated mainly by unattractive plump females who publicly fantasize about having sex with guys in bands. Kind of like a role-playing game where people NOBODY will fuck make up stories about their incredible sexual encounters with people they WISH they could fuck. It would be kind of funny in a sad and pathetic way except the fun doesn’t stop there – hate and good old-fashioned outright blatant racism are also encouraged to spice things up and remind you how truly ugly these scourges are. TRULY ugly on the inside (the outside is obvious).”

Quite.

There’s a serious point here, though. Twitter and other social networks are bringing artists even closer to their fans, which is usually hailed (not least by us) as A Wonderful Thing. But the flipside of that is it brings them even closer to stalkers, haters and loons. And right now, sites like Twitter could arguably use more effective blocking tools in that regard.

Reznor seems doubtful on this front. “We’re in a world where the mainstream social networks want any and all people to boost user numbers for the big selloff and are not concerned with the quality of experience.”
