YouTube testing choose-your-own ads
When consumers are given the choice between watching adverts and not watching adverts, it’s easy to predict which they’d choose. But what if they could choose between different adverts?
That’s what YouTube is doing in a trial that’’s just got underway. Viewers can choose between watching a single 30-second pre-roll ad, or up to four 15-second ads within a clip – with a choice of two different ads if they go for the pre-roll. The trial is only running with long-form content like TV shows.
“We are constantly testing a wide range of options to find the right advertising format for the right content on YouTube, and we think giving users a say in the process helps our efforts,” says product manager Phil Farhi in a blog post announcing the trial.
