Roccatune streaming site files for insolvency

Another ad-funded music startup bites the dust: German streaming service Roccatune has filed for insolvency, with CEO Constantin Thyssen blaming a failed round of financing, according to TechCrunch Europe.

The service used to be called adTunes, but changed its name due to similarities with Apple’s iTunes. The site’s business model was based on making money from advertising, as well as affiliate fees on click-through links to Amazon and other e-commerce sites.

TechCrunch’s story is headlined ‘Germany’s version of LastFM files for insolvency’, which is slightly misleading. Germany DOES have an official version of Last.fm, which is still going – earlier in the year, it was one of the three countries spared when Last.fm axed its free streaming feature. Whether it’s making money remains to be seen, but Roccatune presumably wasn’t.
