We7 hosting Jay-Z playback; blasts Forrester music windows report

UK streaming music service We7 is offering a stream of Jay-Z’s new The Blueprint 3 album in advance of its release next Monday. It’s the latest high-profile pre-release deal for the company.

Talking of which, We7’s Clive Gardiner popped up with a comment on our blog post about Forrester’s report suggesting that release windows are the way forward for the music biz – with free streaming services getting access to new music last.

“Holding releases back from free to consumer services such as ad-funded streaming would do nothing except drive people back to unlicensed services,” he writes. “Segmentation and added value can still work – but all these segments need to co-exist timewise. Without engaging the music fan in the first place through access, the mass market for upsells of any kind will never grow.”
