The Sun launches we7-powered Mika pre-release listening party

UK streaming music service we7 has been working hard in recent months to secure a string of pre-release exclusives on new albums. The latest is from Mika, with his The Boy Who Knew Too Much, which goes on sale on Monday but can be streamed online now.

The twist is that the album stream is being plugged on UK newspaper The Sun’s website, where it’s billed as an exclusive. It’s a sign of we7’s strategy of partnering with media outlets to embed music on their sites – one of its big differences with rival Spotify. That said, Spotify too has been much in evidence on media sites, albeit with playlists that involve clicking through to open its desktop client.

Anyway, you can listen to the Mika album on The Sun’s website, although it’s not completely exclusive – it can also be streamed from we7’s own website.

We7 is offering the album as an embeddable widget. Why couldn’t any publisher just grab it?

Good comment Jack. Glad you noticed that any we7 widget placed anywhere can be clicked on, copied and shared by any other we7 user, and placed anywhere else on the net. This is one of the beauties of we7 being a web-based service.

Web-based also means that if my Firefox crashes or takes up too much memory, any web-based application will be in trouble. No such problems with a client like Spotify where you can listen for hours without any problems.

Still, for a pre-release the we7-concept looks quite interesting.

Have a look JB at how much memory your Spotify application is consuming…..all the time whether it is in use or not. Maybe thats why the web-based applications are having trouble?
