Nokia sues Apple, claims iPhone infringes ten patents

Nokia is suing Apple, claiming that its iPhone infringes ten of Nokia’s patents relating to GSM, UMTS and WLAN technology. The complaint has been filed with the Federal District Court in Delaware. Did anybody see this coming? Not us.

Nokia claims that it’s signed licensing agreements regarding the ten patents with “approximately 40 companies, including virtually all the leading mobile device vendors”. But not Apple, clearly.

Nokia says the patents cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption, and that every single iPhone model since the first one in 2007 has infringed them. “By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia’s intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia’s innovation,” says Ilkka Rahnasto, VP of legal and intellectual property at Nokia, in a statement.
