Sorry folks, Spotify Premium isn’t dropping to £6.49 after all
A report on Billboard.biz suggested yesterday that the price of a Spotify Premium subscription is dropping to £6.49 in the UK as a result of the company’s sponsorship deal with Swiftcover. However, it seems that’s not quite the case (the story has since been changed accordingly).
Spotify’s communications manager Jim Butcher got in touch with Music Ally to point out that this was a one-time only Swiftcover campaign involving emails sent out to a small proportion of existing free users of Spotify in the UK – those who’d opted in to receive special promotions when signing up.
In other words: “We have not dropped the price of Premium. This was an advertiser promotion, pure and simple!” However, not every customer who was emailed got the £6.49 offer – which only applies for the first six months of their subscription.
Butcher says Swiftcover sent out a range of offers – £8.99, £7.99, £6.49 and £4.99. While probably providing good data on uptake at different price points, it’s a risky strategy – we received the £8.99 email, and if we’d accepted the offer, would be feeling pretty peeved now to find out that some other new signups will be spending as much as £24 less than us over the next six months.
