we7 launches Heat Maps for label partners
UK streaming music service we7 has launched a new feature – Heat Maps – designed to help labels see where in the UK their artists, tracks and albums are most popular, as well as genres.
The geolocation-based feature offers, yes, heat maps of the UK – an example is on the right (click for the full-size version). The idea is to help labels tailor their marketing and physical distribution according to where their artists are popular, as well as to hepl artists plan where to stop in on when touring.
“we7 has always been open with the data that we have,” says CTO Gareth Reakes. “Providing insight into that data was the next logical step and provides even more value to labels and artists.”
Marrying fan data to location is an increasingly common practice in the music industry, with bands already mining their mailing lists to find hotspots of fans. Meanwhile, there are several iPhone music apps – including iLike’s – that allow fans to register their favourite bands and be sent recommendations of local gigs – with artists and labels also able to tap into that data.

Would be nice to make this data available over an API, could imagine some really cool mashups.

Amazing – they’ve come up with a way of telling you where you live, and where cities are!
