Spotify says “no truth” to rumours of imminent console debut
Spotify has moved to dispel blogosphere buzz around its plans to launch on games consoles, fuelled by a report on games site Baxy-z earlier today. It quoted an anonymous tipster from within Spotify as saying “we have something in the works for the next gen consoles. We’ve been working on it for some time now and we can’t wait to reveal it to you guys!”
True? Well, here’s Spotify’s official spokesperson with the company’s official response: “We’ve always said that we want to be on as many devices as possible so that we can bring music to wherever our users are, but there’s no truth to the anonymous rumours about Spotify coming to game consoles any time soon”.
It makes sense for Spotify to be eyeing the console market, though. Sony and Microsoft in particular have been striking deals with web firms and media companies recently – witness Last.fm and Facebook integration on Xbox 360, and the BBC’s iPlayer for PlayStation 3. Spotify would be a good catch for any console firm, but presumably the company would want console owners to stump up for a premium subscription as it does mobile users.
