ACTA negotiations may include global three-strikes provisions

If you thought the various graduated response schemes being introduced around the world were controversial, imagine the reaction if they were universal. Yet the Financial Times reports that internet disconnections may be on the agenda of the highly-secretive negotiations for a new Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).

European ISP trade body EuroISPA claims that measures being considered are “severe and wide-ranging, including the possibility of users being disconnected from the Internet”.

Meanwhile Duke University law professor James Boyle tells the FT that “Proposals include fines and imprisonment for non-commercial file-sharing, increasing the liability of internet service providers for copyright infringements by their customers and much more”.
