Opposition to Digital Economy Bill ‘wash-up’ plans grows

A group of public figures have written an open letter calling for the Digital Economy Bill to be subjected to proper scrutiny in the UK Parliament, rather than rushed through in the ‘wash-up’ period before the upcoming General Election.

“Democracy and accountability will be sidestepped if this bill is rushed through and amended without debate,” says the letter, whose signatories include Billy Bragg, ISPA secretary general Nicholas Lansman, Tom Watson MP and screenwriter Graham Linehan.

Campaigning body the Open Rights Group claimed on Friday that more than 10,000 people had already written to their MPs demanding that the bill gets a full debate. However, UK Music boss Feargal Sharkey has called for the US to support the UK legislation, in his keynote speech at SXSW.
