Music recognition service Shazam has added 25 million new users in the last six months, taking its total install base to 75 million people. The news comes as the company also reveals it has identified more than one billion songs in the ten years since it first launched.
“Shazam is now a brand that consumers know and trust and our one billionth tag is testament to our ever growing fan base of users that enjoy Shazam’s unrivalled music experience,” says CEO Andrew Fisher. “In the future our fans will continue to see further innovation from Shazam as we continue to expand our service and maintain our position as the most popular music application for mobile phones in the world.”
Fisher says Shazam remains confident that it will have more than 100 million users by the end of this year.
The big question is how much money Shazam is making from this growth. The company’s most recent set of published accounts in the UK revealed that its revenues for the financial year ending on 30 June 2009 were £7.3 million. However, its userbase has nearly doubled since then, on the back of rapid global and platform expansion.
In January this year, Shazam said that its mobile apps were generating 260,000 track purchases a day, through songs tagged by its users. Analysis from Billboard at the time estimated that this meant Shazam was responsible for 6.3% of all global single-track downloads.
