iTunes Store gets Digital 45 section
Wednesday, July 15th, 2009
Celebrate the 60th anniversary of 45rpm vinyl singles by… buying iTunes downloads? Okay, it sounds contradictory, but Apple has launched a new Digital 45 section on its iTunes Store, selling two-song bundles (i.e. an A-side and B-side) with artwork.
Rhino and EMI have been talking about their support, with Rhino set to release 25 D45s a month, many of which haven’t been digitally available before. Meanwhile, EMI is kicking off with 35 D45s by Coldplay, David Bowie, REM and other artists.
Sony Music is on board too – we’ve spotted D45s from Michael Jackson and Van Morrison already. The new format is selling for £1.19 in the UK iTunes Store. When Apple agreed to introduce variable pricing earlier this year, there was much talk about innovative bundling. It seems this is one of the first examples on iTunes.
