Gordon Brown: Probably not a Pirate Bay fan

Friday, April 17th, 2009

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown took the stage this morning at the Digital Britain summit in London, and promised to support creative industries in their battle against online piracy. Or, as he put it: “We need to support the creation and availability of high-quality content. We will support the legal framework that enables the private sector to create content.”

Of course, what form that legal framework will take remains under discussion, with the music industry and ISPs trying to thrash out the best (or at least the most acceptable to both sides) way to crack down on illegal file-sharing.

Interestingly, Music Ally understands that Brown has privately ruled out a three-strikes graduated response strategy, where persistent file-sharers would be booted off the Internet. The French Creation and Internet law, containing such provisions, was voted down last Thursday, while three strikes initiatives have struggled to gain ground elsewhere in the world.

The Digital Britain event lasts all day. Revolution is liveblogging it, while there’s also an official Digital Britain Twitter feed providing pithy updates.
