Man shoots music video with iPhone 3GS (oh, and a steadycam)

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Everyone knows you can make music with an iPhone – artists like The Mentalists and Gary Go have got media coverage as a result. But shooting a music video?

It’s possible with the new iPhone 3GS, and US artist Ben Rivet is the first to benefit, courtesy of a production company called Showdown Productions. See the results above.

However, they also used a fairly price-looking steadycam system, which rather goes against the ”anyone can do this with an iPhone” spirit of the project. Even so, it’s canny marketing on the part of both Rivet and Showdown.

Google has announced that uploads from mobile phones to YouTube have increased by 400% since last Friday, when Apple’s new iPhone 3GS went on sale. The handset lets users shoot video clips and upload them directly to the video-sharing site.

Apple reveals 1m iPhone 3GS sales in opening weekend

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Apple has announced that it sold more than one million of its new iPhone 3GS handsets over the weekend, after it went on sale on Friday morning.

What’s more, six million existing iPhone owners have downloaded the new iPhone 3.0 software update since it came out last Wednesday. And guess who popped up in the press release announcing all this: “Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” says CEO Steve Jobs, who’s easing his way back to work this month.

Analyst Piper Jaffray claims that 56% of iPhone 3GS buyers were upgrading from an older iPhone, while 12% were ditching a BlackBerry to buy the new handset.

However, there are still plenty of iRefuseniks out there: NPD Group says the cost of data plans and a reluctance to switch carriers to AT&T Wireless are the most common reasons for NOT buying an iPhone in the US.

iPhone 3GS unveiled at Apple’s WWDC 2009 show

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Steve Jobs didn’t make the rumoured surprise appearance during Apple’s WWDC keynote tonight, but as expected, the company debuted a new iPhone model during the event. The iPhone 3GS is a faster, more powerful version of Apple’s handset, and goes on sale on 19th June.

Among its new features are a three-megapixel camera, significantly better battery life, HSDPA data speeds, a beefed-up processor, video shooting and editing, and a digital compass. It will come in two models: a 16GB one for $199 and a 32GB one for $299. The existing iPhone 3G will be sold alongside it for $99 until stocks run dry.

During the keynote, Apple revealed that more than 40 million iPhones and iPod touches have been sold globally, and that there are now more than 50,000 applications available for them on the App Store.

High on the keynote agenda was the iPhone 3.0 software update, which will be available two days before the iPhone 3GS on 17th June. Alongside this announcement, Apple revealed that iPhone owners will be able to buy and download music videos from the iTunes Store from their devices soon, as well as films and TV shows. Currently, it’s just music.
