Those rumours earlier this year about longer song previews on the iTunes Store? It seems they’re finally being proved true.MacRumors has a copy of what it claims is an email from Apple to label representatives, explaining that “We are pleased to let you know that we are preparing to increase the length of music previews from 30 seconds to 90 seconds on the iTunes Store in the United States. We believe that giving potential customers more time to listen to your music will lead to more purchases.”Songs longer than two minutes and 30 seconds will have up to 90-second samples, although shorter songs will stick at 30 seconds. “You agree to license, or pass through to Apple, gratis mechanical rights for 90-second ‘Clips’ embodying the entirety of compositions owned or controlled, in whole or in part, by you or your affiliates,” explains the email. At the time of the original speculation, publishers protested that they had not been consulted about Apple’s plans – presumably the reason for the delay. Apple has presented the change as a fait accompli now though: anyone who disagrees will seemingly have to remove their music from the iTunes Store.
