Google has announced the `Google Content Network’, an online entertainment service that will kick off with an exclusive animated series called `Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy’ (he’s the creator of `Family Guy’). Rather than being hosted on a single Google site like YouTube, instead the show will be distributed to thousands of websites as an embedded player, with advertising bundled in as preroll and `lower third banners’. It’s a big step forward for Google’s ambitions to become an online entertainment distributor, although the fact that it’s not restricted to YouTube raises questions over Google’s plans to effectively monetise its video-sharing site through ads
